THE MARK DAVIES INJURED RIDERS FUND PRO CELEBRITY POLO DAY
INCORPERATING THE MIDHURST TOWN CUP 2008

Sunday 22nd June 2008 was the date for the Annual Mark Davies Injured Riders Celebrity polo Day and this year the new venue for the day was the magnificent setting of Cowdray Park Polo Club, Midhurst, West Sussex.

After a very wet and blustery start to the day, just as the first guests arrived, the wind settled down and the sun came out!

This year there was a new format to the Day with the pro Celebrity Matches taking part in the morning.

The teams were:

Group Clean
Lt Commander Al Wilson
Richard Dunwoody
Sam Thomas
Peter Woods

Transllloyd
Otis Ferry
Lucinda Green
Charlie Talbot Baker
Sgt Toby Horn

Food Furniture
Katie Price
Andrew Gould
Oscar Lawry
L/Bdr Peter Fry

Asian Woman
Sehr Ahmed
Lila Person
Charlie Mann
Sgt Kevin Britton

Throughout all the matches, everyone commented on the high standard all the players achieved, considering for some it was their first attempt at Polo.

The runners up final resulted in a win for Translloyd and then the final took place between Group Clean and Asian Woman with a resounding win for Group Clean made possible by a fantastic goal from Richard Dunwoody. Lord Sebastian Coe presented the prizes to all the teams.

The best pony in the competition judged by Chris Bethall was Dino owned and played by Oscar Lawry.

There was plenty for everyone to do throughout the day, the now renowned Silent Auction offering many “money can’t buy” lots, the fun fair, a shopping village with over 30 varied stands, also Pedigree kindly sponsored the Dog agility challenge run by Barrie Harvey, this provided endless fun for all the dogs and their owners who took part.

At 3pm everyone was treated to a spectacular high goal match between Talandracas and Atlantic Capital with Talandracas winning 15- 12. Both teams will be participating in the Gold Cup Tournament later in the summer. This match showed everyone the wonderful skills of the players at this level and their fantastic ponies and has inspired all the celebrity players to raise their standard and return next year.

We would like to thank everyone who supported the day in so many different ways - without you all it would not have been possible.

Please Watch This Space for next year’s date at Cowdray Park - we hope to see you there!

The Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund would like to thank everyone who made this day possible our Sponsors, Volunteers and all of you who came to the day.

The day is an annual event so anyone with any ideas or if you would like to make a donation, please contact Rosemary on 01726 813156 or email rosemary@mdirf.co.uk

PRESS RELEASE - 7th September 2007
ZARA PHILLIPS BECOMES PATRON OF THE MARK DAVIES INJURED RIDERS FUND

Equestrian sportswoman and Eventing World Champion, Zara Phillips OBE, daughter of Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, has agreed to become the Patron of the Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund (MDIRF).

The eldest granddaughter of The Queen, Zara Phillips - who was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2006 - frequently attends charity events and supports several causes, mainly for spinal injuries and children’s charities. She has always felt strongly about safety in equestrian matters, therefore becoming Patron of the MDIRF is a role dear to her heart: “

We are delighted that Zara Phillips has agreed to become our Patron,” said Rosemary Lang of the MDIRF. “She is a very high profile young sportswoman who has, as an active rider, had personal experience in riding accidents. She also lost a close friend in an equestrian accident therefore the importance of safety during eventing and riding, plus the support of those injured in riding accidents, are issues she fully upholds. We are proud that she has decided to endorse our charity in such a positive way.”

Zara Phillips commented: "I feel it very important to stress the need for safety in all equestrian matters therefore I am more than happy to be involved with this vitally important charity which does so much to protect and support injured riders and their families, particularly with the valuable role it plays in reinforcing the all-important safety message to all riders"

For further information on the MDIRF, please contact Rosemary Lang on 01726 813156, 07710 788364 or by email on rosemary@mdirf.co.uk.

Jane Davies is recognised by the British Horse Society at the Sefton Awards

Heroes in the field of equestrian safety were honoured by the BHS at their annual Sefton Awards, which were held at the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment’s Barracks, Knightsbridge, London

The awards mark outstanding contribution in the fields of riding and road safety and can be given to anyone who, through their achievements, has raised awareness of the need for safety. In July 1991 it was agreed that the first award would be presented at the Hyde park Barracks following on from the Household Cavalry sanctioning calling them the Sefton Awards.

Jane who alongside her late husband Michael started the fund in 1998 is a very special person with a strong sense of right, who will fight to help where she sees a genuine need and has worked so hard over the years to help improve safety and awareness.

The Ceremony took place on October 22nd 2007 and as well as the awards and an excellent lunch all the winners were given a fascinating tour of the stables and working life of the Barracks whilst on ceremonial duty in London Sadly Jane was unable to attend the Award ceremony but our new Chairman Mrs Sarah Bullen received it on her behalf saying, “it felt very unfair that I was able to enjoy the day and all the accolades without any of the hard work.”

RYANS’ OPEN EVENING AN ALL-ROUND WINNER, AND THE GIRLS RULE OK!

Large crowds braved the uncertain weather to attend Matt and Marie Ryan’s inaugural SupaStuds Charity Open Evening at their yard near Abergavenny. They were rewarded with a wonderful evening’s entertainment. The setting was stunning, with fabulous views over the arena to the Black Mountans beyond. In the end, the rain held off till late in the evening, by which time most people were too involved in the entertainment to care!

The main focus of the event was Matt’s lecture/demonstration, which featured Marie and Owen Cooper (Matt and Marie’s Head Lad) as guinea pig riders, on Pre-Novice to Intermediate horses. Matt then rode Anne Pople’s Advanced horse Slight of Hand to demonstrate the more demanding aspects of both flatwork and jumping, accompanied by an entertaining commentary from Marie, who provided knowledgeable and sometimes irreverent insights into her husband’s performance!

During the interval, spectators were invited into the arena to meet Matt’s great Olympic gold medal-winning mount Kibah Sandstone, as well as try on Matt’s three gold medals for size. There was also a chance to tour the yard and chat to Matt, Marie and their team.

The evening finished with what had been billed as a “Celebrity Challenge”, which turned out to be wild gymkhana games on ponies borrowed from members of the local Pony Clubs. Matt and Marie were joined by guests Clayton and Lucinda Fredericks and Austin and Kathrin O’Connor, and the games were played in two teams – boys against the girls. With a lively commentary by BBC rugby supreme Eddie Butler, the evening caught alight as the antics of ponies and riders brought tears of laughter to the spectators. Marie’s pony spent the entire evening trying to buck her off. Austin’s pony refused point blank to go anywhere near the loudspeakers. Buckets of water were spilt and thrown over and by Clayton. And the highlight was the dressing up race which featured the girls wearing boys’ underwear, with Lucinda sporting a very pert thong which reputedly belonged to Matt, while Clayton, Matt and Austin had to master back-fastening bras while controlling their wildly over-excited ponies. Amidst cheating and chaos, the girls were declared worthy winners in the end, putting their husbands firmly in their places!

There was a good spread of tradestands at the event, mostly drawn from companies whose products Matt uses and endorses. Clayton Fredericks’ Southern Stars Saddles caused a lot of interest, as many of the people attending the event had not seen them before. Clayton is working with Matt to design a cross country saddle to suit his style of riding, and Matt is currently competing in a proto-type saddle about which he is very enthusiastic. The evening, sponsored by SupaStuds, was held to raise money for the Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund and local charity the Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies. While the final total has not yet been calculated, well over two thousand pounds has been raised for these two great causes. “I hope everyone enjoyed themselves” said Matt afterwards, “I know we had a great time! We are hoping to make this an annual event, and we have some ideas to make it bigger and better next time round.”

The Mark Davis Fund really does make a difference

About six years ago I broke my leg really badly whilst out hunting.  I was, and still am, self-employed with horses.  At the time, I had a yard full of hunter liveries and it was early in the season - very inconvenient!
Immediately, I was lucky enough to have a friend staying who helped me out.  But long term, it looked as though all my clients would have to find alternative accommodation, as I could not afford to employ a full time groom
and maintain a living wage for myself.  Living in the sticks, I was realistic enough to know that once those clients went, I would be struggling to find replacements once I was up and about.

However, I was extremely fortunate in having one or two fairy godmothers looking out for me - including our pony club DC - who made enquiries to the MDIRF whilst I was hospitalised.  Being self-employed, I know all too well
about the petty bureaucracy and the tedium of government form filling so I was amazed at the speed and straightforwardness of our dealings with MDIRF.  And it wasn't even me who applied! They were amazing.  They made if financially possible for me to broker a deal with my friend to stay until the end of the season.  Talk about a relief!  Anyway, the upshot is, it was six months before I could ride again and two years before I could run
without getting into a row with my dentist for grinding my teeth. To show my appreciation, this year I decided to run my first half marathon on behalf of the Fund and managed to raise £1000.

Before I finish, I would like to just add one important thing I learnt through all this. Always, always, before you participate in any dangerous activity like horse riding, make sure your hair is clean and your legs are waxed because your orthopod might be just as gorgeous as mine was!
